Top 5 TED Talks on Leadership in Business

Everyone loves TED Talks—and why not? The talks have become a sensation because they’ve given all of us a chance to listen to brilliant thinkers discuss the topics that inspire them. The only problem: There are now so many talks that it can be hard to find the best ones.

For those of you who don’t have time to spend all day watching TED Talks, here are five of the best on leadership in business. Happy watching!

5. Where Good Ideas Come from

This video, author and entrepreneur Steven Johnson explores how to create an environment that will foster great ideas. Johnson explains: “It’s hard to go to your boss and say, ‘I have an excellent idea for our organization. It will be useful in 2020. Could you just give me some time to do that?’”

4. What It Takes To Be a Great Leader

After 25 years of professional leadership experience, Roselinde Torres, senior partner and managing director at consulting firm BCG, asks two key questions in this talk: “Why are the leadership gaps widening when there’s so much more investment in leadership development? And what are the great leaders doing distinctly different to thrive and grow?” Torres highlights what great leaders do differently and what you can do to grow to your full potential.

3. Life Lessons from an Ad Man

In this unforgettable talk, famed ad man Rory Sutherland, Vice Chairman of Ogilvy & Mather UK, argues that, when it comes to advertising, perceived value is at least as important as actual value. While intangible value “gets a bad rap,” according to Sutherland, it can actually lead to a world where there is less emphasis on material goods.

2. Dare to Disagree

The former CEO of five different businesses, Margaret Heffernan explains that while many leaders try to avoid conflict, they should instead see conflict as an opportunity to grow and progress. According to Heffernan, constructive conflict “requires that we find people who are very different from ourselves.” It’s a practice that demands patience and a lot of energy, but, as Heffernan stresses, it can have a very high return on investment.

1. Why We Have Too Few Women Leaders

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg made huge waves in the discussion of work/life balance for women in her 2010 TED Talk. She argues that despite the progress that has been made in the past century, women today face harder choices than ever between personal fulfillment and professional success. Sandberg’s main messages for women who want to stay in the workplace are the following: “One, sit at the table. Two, make your partner a real partner. And three, don’t leave before you leave.” She elaborates on the entire discussion in her book Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead., Work, and the Will to Lead.

If you’re not familiar with our top five TED talks, then hopefully you’ll find the time to get watching and get inspired. Grab the opportunity to achieve the best leadership in your business with TED by your side!
